Today, apps are everywhere,on our phones, tablets and even smart watches. From social media to games and banking, apps make life very easy. But have you ever wondered what the very first app was?
Let's take a trip back to the beginning of mobile apps and how they have evolved.

What Is An App?
An app, short for "application", is a software program designed to task on a device - like sending messages, playing music or checking the weather.

The First Mobile Apps(1993- early 2000s)
The first mobile apps were not from Google or Apple. In fact, they came with early mobile phones like the IBM Simon, released in 1993. The IBM Simon is known as the first smart phone and it came built in apps like:
  • Calculator
  • Calendar
  • Address Book
  • Note Pad
These were very basic but they were the beginning of the app revolution.

How Apps Have Evolved
Today's apps are faster, smarter and often powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Some apps can now :
  • Speak to you ( like Siri and Google Assistant)
  • Help you learn languages
  • Control your home lights and doors (smart home apps)
  • Even let you design buildings or code games
